Mallory got to see her second ever NHL game last night (her first being when she was 6 weeks old…). We had sweet seats again for the Blue Jackets-Red Wings game and Mallory got on tv a lot because she was mostly standing right behind Hitch.
I guess there were a couple of spots where she got some good exposure because at two points during the game, both Rick’s & my cell phones were blowing up with texts and voicemails. My mom would call and leave a message with the time left in the game and what she saw. How nice that one message said “blah..blah..after penalty..blah…you look tired.” Thanks.
It was a pretty good game – the Blue Jackets were up a goal for a long time but then the Red Wings scored three quick goals so the good guys lost. It is fun sitting down so close to the bench because you can hear all the guys hollering and the hitting seems so much harder when you are that close.
Here is a quick synopsis of the texts we got:
- SK: (in response to me writing “did they show her falling off my lap because I was checking texts?”) “Yes, my lawyer will be calling you. She just was on big time.”
- SG: “you are very easy to spot. Mallory was on TV earlier. tell Rick to go easy on the popcorn”
- Brett, one of the guys Rick works with is in his mid-20s and never been to a hockey game. His text to Rick: “I hate you”.
- And this is the funniest: Doug, Rick’s sportscaster buddy, texted me this: “Basically now you are just an attention whore. You’re getting more FSN facetime than me. Right after that penalty was called u were picking up Mal right behind Hitchcock.” Doug also texted Rick and told him “I saw your hand”. LOL.
Mallory is wearing her Hitch pin in that last picture…back when I worked for the K-Wings they had buttons made up of all the players and coaches and I still have this one and a few others. Pregame I showed it to the Blue Jackets’ equipment manager (who also worked for the K-Wings when I was there) and he showed it to the other equipment manager, who then showed it to one of the four assistant coaches on the bench who were watching warmups. That guy laughed and pinned it to his shirt and was patiently waiting for the other three coaches to notice it. Then he wore it into the lockerroom…I am dying to know what Hitch’s reaction was when he saw it. LOL!
She did great during the game – I kept trying to tell her that this fall at Michigan Stadium, she isn’t going to have that much room to hang out.
We got to go downstairs and see Hitch after the game. Mallory was still wide awake and having fun, even though it was 10.30p. The guy I worked for at Kalamazoo was there too with his two sons (who aren’t 9 & 7 anymore) so it was fun to catch up with them . When Hitch came out Mallory was actually reaching for his tie and was totally flirting with him or something; anytime anyone else tried to talk to her all night she would shrink back into our legs or arms so I was dying at how comfortable she seemed with him!
I am not excited about getting no sleep – today will be a long day. The clock just ticked 7am so I have to start work.
