Mallory

Lace ‘Em Up

Mallory went ice skating for the first time today! Well, really the first time she was on the ice was in February of 2006 when I played hockey before I knew I was pregnant. But today was the first time Mallory went ice skating with her own skates.

She was pretty into getting her skates on (yes, they are figure skates and not hockey skates, settle down, Mello). And she was even able to stand up on them and didn’t look like an anklebender! But the best part is that she got to wear a helmet that looks just like the ones the real hockey players wear.

But…for as much as she told us she wanted to go skating, she didn’t much like it once she got on the ice. I don’t even think they got more than 20’ from the door. Oh well. Rick heard through a friend that maybe we should start her with shoes on, instead of skates, while she pushes a chair across the ice, so maybe this winter that can be the goal when the lake freezes (I’ll stay inside making them hot cocoa. Actually, I’ve never made hot cocoa, so I’ll make them hot chocolate instead.).

* * *

Mallory’s birthday is coming up (in case you hadn’t heard her tell you a hundred times in the past week) and we celebrated with my family today.

Mallory got a bunch of books, a puzzle, some cute clothes and a train set (from grandpa, the engineer, of course).

Funnies from the afternoon:

  • Lauren kept touching Mallory and Mallory kept yelling “NO Ohlone!!” My sister kept telling Lauren that when someone says “NO” that it means they don’t like what you are doing and you have to stop. Two seconds later, Lauren did it again, but this time Mallory was clearer: “No Ohlone…no like it!”
  • IMG_1812 The girls were playing beauty shop with my hair. Mallory actually does this at home occasionally and the funniest time was when we were sitting on the kitchen floor and she could see herself in the oven door. She would swish my hair around and then reach up to her teeth and then swish her hands in my hair again. I realized that when the ladies at daycare do the girls’ hair, they must hold the ponytail holders in their teeth before they putting them in the girls’ hair. (RE: Lauren’s banged up face in this picture…she took a header when we all went walking in the woods yesterday – both Cooper and my sister’s dog slammed into her and she went head first into the gravel. She got a nasty cut on her forehead and some other cuts and bruises. Stupid dogs).
  • We all sang happy birthday to Mallory and my mom and my sister during dinner and while we were cleaning up from dinner so we could have cake, Mallory was walking around, singing to herself “happy birthday to you!”. I tried to get it on video but she wouldn’t cooperate.
  • Emily wanted Liam to give Mallory a kiss but he kept saying no. So she asked Mallory if she would give Liam a kiss. Mallory obliged and walked right up to Liam and tilted his head back and planted one. My mom actually had tears of laughter coming down her cheeks. IMG_5965

We will have another little party tomorrow evening with just the three of us (I should be wrapping presents right now) and on Thursday – her actual birthday – we will go out for birthday breakfast since Rick leaves after work for Minnesota. It’s too bad that she is too young to appreciate that her birthday celebration is being spread out over a whole week!
