From LonelyPlanet.com
Think palm trees, white beaches, coral reefs – and the world’s biggest K-Mart. Guam doesn’t fit the stereotype of tribal villages and ancient cultures untouched by the modern world. This highly developed strategic US territory is no postcard ‘Tropical Paradise’. Sure there’s sun, sand and wilderness but travelers know Guam mainly for the duty free shopping.

Watching Mallory Play

January 13, 2008

I keep forgetting that my child can play by herself. I guess I feel that since I am away from her all day, I should always be at her side when we are at home. But then I remember that it is good for her to have a little alone play time. Right now she is busy running back and forth across the living room, occasionally stopping to watch me type. Now she is trying so very hard to sit on her red Elmo chair while carefully shoving her bear blankie next to her on one side, and a large …

Travel Blog #2

January 12, 2008

Well, if you’ve gotten this far, you know we are going to Guam. We have had this trip planned since last February, as soon as we could book the flights with our frequent flyer miles.
Why Guam? I was born on Guam, my dad was in the Navy, and we lived there until I was 1.5 years old. Obviously I don’t remember anything but I have always wanted to go back to visit. My dad promised me a trip back when I graduated high school if I had a 4.0. That didn’t happen so he promised me a trip back when …

We are gearing up for our big trip. Part of me thinks it is silly to leave so soon after the bowl game but I guess there really isn’t any other good time to travel. July is the only other month that Rick has down time at work and we want to be on the lake as much as possible in the summer. Two years ago we were getting ready for our belated honeymoon to Aruba…hard to believe that was only two years ago!

Rick is MAD!!

January 11, 2008

I picked Mallory up from school today and got a report that there is a little boy in Mallory’s room who walked over to her today and tried to give her a kiss. One of the teachers said “Oh, are you going to give Mallory a kiss?” and Mallory took her pacifier out and accepted a kiss from this little boy! Rick is about to march right down to the daycare and kick that kid’s a$$!!!
Another sweet report that I got to witness firsthand…Mallory & Alli giving each other a hug goodbye today when we left, with their little heads …

A Major Hair Don't

January 10, 2008

Today was “crazy hair day” at Mallory’s daycare but with her short hair and dad being in charge this morning, I didn’t bother leaving instructions for how to do (or undo) her hair.
But when I picked up the pumpkinhead today from school…this is what she looked like:

Major kudos go out to Miss Carole for actually getting these little hair bands in Mallory’s hair.
Before you ask why I didn’t get a picture of her from the front with the ponytails, it’s because you couldn’t see the hair ties anyway. But I should have gotten a picture of her from the front …

Sumo

I thought Mallory was supposed to start slimming down once she started walking? It seems as though that big ole tummy is just getting bigger!

* * *
She is starting be a help around the house. If there is a random piece of paper within her reach, she will bring it to me. And when I tell her it’s time to feed Cooper, she takes my finger to walk to the closet where we keep Cooper’s food. Then she helps by offering Cooper his “black pill” (fancy arthritis medicine) and will help me find Cooper’s dish. It is almost always …

How old are you?

January 6, 2008

Here is one of Mallory’s new tricks…when you ask her how old she is, this is what she does:

Brilliant, I tell you. Just brilliant.
* * *
I’ve written before about Mallory’s tendency to smack my face when she’s tired and grumpy. Unfortunately she usually does it when I’m asking for a kiss so my face is in close range. A friend of mine said that when her kids were little and did that, she tried to show them how to have gentle hands, so I thought I’d give it a try with Mallory. Yesterday after she tried to hit me, I …

Guck!

January 4, 2008

Just now Mallory was playing with her little Leap Frog LeapPad toy and I wasn’t paying any attention to her, but then I heard her say “GUCK!”. I looked down at what she was doing and she had the LeapPad book turned to the page with a duck on it. Learning this word must have come from our week in Orlando and the ducks Mallory saw everyday in the lobby of the hotel.
I just realized that a good mom would have a running list of all the words that her kid can say…I better get working on that. But in …
