Our family traveled north to spend a short weekend with friends at their fabulous house outside of Harbor Springs. The plan was that Rick would ski all weekend, and Mallory & I would relax at the house, taking long naps and reading tons of books.
We got up north late afternoon on Friday and Rick & his buddies immediately hit the slopes for some night skiing. Mallory & I hung back with Sue and her two youngest – and all three kids had a great time playing and got along great and the girls were sharing their fancy shoes, it was so funny.
The next morning after breakfast, we all packed up and headed to Nubs Nob…we were hoping to get Mallory on skis for the first time. Well, she let us put the ski boots on her but once we put the skis on she was not excited at all. Rick had to carry her over to the bunny hill, which now has a chairlift, not the tow rope that they used to have back in my olden days of skiing up there! We got Mallory fired up about the big swing that would take her up the hill and she finally allowed Rick to carry her on to the chairlift and away they went. He tried to get her to ski down between his legs but he ended up having to ski down while carrying her (made me a little nervous but RB is a good skier so I wasn’t real worried).
Somehow we talked her into going up the “swing” again and the next time they came down – Mallory was on her own skis between Rick’s legs!! I was soooo proud of her!!! When they got to the bottom, she said she wanted to do it again so off they went. They only got a few runs in because we had to return her loaner skis but it was so cool that she enjoyed it.
Mallory & I headed back to the house, where she was in desperate need of a nap (and I was looking forward to the quiet time in front of the fire with my book). Mallory REFUSED to go down for a nap for over two-and-a-half-freaking-long-ass-hours and I finally texted Rick and told him he needed to come relieve me. Luckily one of our friends was just on their way back to the house so Rick hitched a ride and was back soon. I didn’t have anything I wanted to do but I needed a break from the constant “mommy, momma, HEY MOM, mommmmmmmmmy” that I’d been dealing with for the past few hours. She was in a surprisingly good mood for having had not great sleep the night before, and having no nap that day – so we made the decision to head over to the hill again for a few quick runs before the closed. She was all fired up about going skiing again and got to go down the bunny hill about five more times.
I should point out that I was standing at the bottom of the bunny hill the whole time with our big fancy camera around my neck and our camcorder bag over my shoulder, freezing my arse off because I forgot to bring my gloves.
After a day of skiing (well, after a day of 30 minutes of skiing), Mallory went into full meltdown mode at 6p and was asleep by 6.30p. Mommy/momma/mom/mommmmmmmmmy was VERY happy.
Here are some pictures of our ski bunny:

I’m happy to report that Mallory is almost back to normal – at least as far as we can tell. We are still administering her antibiotics and inhaler but there is no more quick breathing or grunting and her sneezes & big snots are gone too! She slept in bed with me the last two nights and I did hear some congestion in her chest but I’m not too worried about that since the doctor said it could take up to six weeks for the pneumonia to clear. Oh, and if you know our doctor, please don’t mention that Mallory went skiing this weekend. We were told to keep her out of the cold air since it would make it hard for her to breathe. But since she was doing so well I figured there would be no harm in letting her get some fresh air.

Also wanted to give a potty training update. All weekend long, Mallory would go to the bathroom, pull her pants down and take her diaper off and want to sit on the potty. Every single time, the diaper she just took off would be still warm (sorry about that TMI) and she would still want to sit on the potty and expect a potty treat even though she didn’t do anything in the actual potty. But I am thinking that her insistence on having a new diaper on as soon as she pees or poops is a good sign that we are on our way to a diaperless toddler. Again, we are not pushing her since I’ve heard that she may regress when the baby comes.
TMI ALERT!!! DO NOT READ IF YOU DON’T WANT TO BE GROSSED OUT. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED…
Here is another little story about potty training – yesterday in the midst of her not wanting to take a nap, she went upstairs and I heard her close the lid on the toilet a couple of times. She came to the balcony and told me she went poopy and I noticed she was missing her diaper. I’ve tried to get her to NOT take the poopy diapers off herself since who knows what kind of poop we’ll be dealing with but apparently along with not listening to me tell her to take a nap, she didn’t follow my “don’t take off a poopy diaper” advice either. I went up to the bathroom (that has a tile floor, THANK GOD) and found one poopy diaper on the floor near the toilet, and then some spots that looked like poop had been on the actual floor. She was tiptoeing around them, and was telling me something – my first thought was that she picked the poop up with her hands and put it back in her diaper or in the toilet, but her hands were clean (THANK GOD). Then I figured out that she must have used toilet paper to either put the poop back in her diaper or into the toilet, since there were a couple of handfuls of toilet paper in the toilet. I quickly grabbed some Clorox wipes and cleaned the floor while Mallory chattered on about whatever and I was still trying to figure out exactly what happened but gave up.
And with that, I’ll end this post abruptly because I need to sleep. Oh, how come is it that so many of my entries end with that sort of sentence? I think it means that I stay up way too late blogging.
Pnemonia?!?!? What?! Poor thing…I read how she was getting better but never saw what was wrong. Sounds like she’s doing better, thank goodness! What great pictures of her skiing. And of course I had to read the end of the blog, sounds like that is a fairly common occurances with two year olds. We haven’t been there yet but I’m ready when it does :-) Hope to see you guys soon…BEFORE baby!

You are brave to let her try skiing. I wouldn’t have the energy to keep up with her, if she liked it. ;-) I guess that’s why you have RB, eh? HA.
what an awesome post!!! she is so great – i can’t believe she went skiing!!!
