I got a new toy today…a new lens for my camera! It is a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II – and I first heard about it here (she takes some of the most awesome-ist photos of her kids…)
So, what can I do with this fancy lens? I should share that the only thing I remember from my photography class from last year is to keep the Aperture dialed way down. Or up. I can never remember. I think I want it dialed up which means I have a low number. Confusing, huh? Me too.
Anywho – here is my show & tell. I was focusing on the blue button on the top of the bouncy seat in each picture.
See how the background gets blurrier the higher (or lower?) the fstop? (Oh, and I don’t always have all that stuff laying around on the floor of my living room – I purposely put it there for this demonstration.)
And for comparison – this picture has an fstop of 4.
It will be interesting to see how I do playing around with this – since the 1.8 fstop has a pretty small depth of field, I’d think that it wouldn’t be great to be that dialed down then taking pictures of a face, you know? Since faces are three-dimensional – I would have Mallory’s nose in focus but then her curls would be out of focus, and that wouldn’t be so great.

I also got a remote control for my camera so I can take family photos and not pay an exorbitant amount of money to have someone else take them :-) We’ll see how that goes.
And for anyone who said they want me to come take pictures – I’m totally serious – we can work out a time. Weekend mornings are the best for me so just let me know!
