Mallory

Lesson Learned

Daycare called me today and asked me to come get Mallory…because she had a bead stuck up her nose. I raced out of work, not sure what to expect. Was she in distress? I know it’s not life threatening, but would I need to take her to the emergency room or her regular doctor? I called her pediatrician’s office and they had to call me back with a 3:15p appointment. Next call was to my sister, who advised me to not let Mallory drink or eat anything “just in case” they had to put her under anesthesia to remove the bead. The director of Mallory’s daycare met me in the parking lot with Mallory who looked a little shaken – mostly because I think she was afraid she was in trouble. I had a go with the tweezers there in the lot, but couldn’t get around the bead lodged in her right nostril so off to the doctor we went.

The doctor commented that it would have been more helpful if the bead had been blue or green, since apparently red/purple-ish beads are hard to see in the nose (keep that in mind next time your “friend” tells you to stick one up your nose, ok Mallory?). She pulled out the big huge tweezers and she couldn’t get it out either. Next tool was this light-up plastic glowing wand thing (that they use to look in ears or something?) – which worked way better because the bead was situated with the hole pointing down so she was able to fish it out that way. The doctor promised Mallory a stuffed animal and a popsicle for being so brave during the bead removal.

I’m glad that we avoided a trip to the hospital and aside from a little irritation in her nose, she is no worse for the wear.

I’m guessing that “don’t stick things up your nose or in your ears” will be a hot topic this week at her school. And “don’t do stupid stuff that your friends tell you to” is a hot topic this week at home.

  1. I couldn’t have laughed out loud more than I did with this one. Thank goodness she is ok but I can’t tell you how funny I think this is. Exactly what kids are supposed to do. Thank you so much for sharing, I’m sure you will share this one with her for many years to come.
