Mallory

My Bargain Shopper

It’s been a while since I’ve gotten a funny phone call from Mallory’s BFF’s mom, with a funny story about the girls. But it was worth the wait, because it was a doozy. :-)

Apparently yesterday at school, the girls were playing “Payer” (based on the context, Christine interpreted this as the girls playing “store”) and Mallory was buying bugs from Allison.

But then Mallory came back and told Allison that she had to return the bugs “because they weren’t on sale”.

What’s really funny about that story is the conversation that Mallory & I had that later very night (before I heard about Mallory returning her bugs to the Pear…), regarding her Halloween costume. She decided she wanted to be a ladybug, and I was all over that, because the costume was like $25. But when I added in the antennae headband, and the wings, and the wand (because ladybugs need wands?), the total in my online shopping cart was SIXTY-SIX DOLLARS.

I told Mal she had to come up with a different costume because daddy wouldn’t be happy if we spent $66 on something she’s going to wear for a few hours. Mallory suggested “…maybe we can just pay two dollars? Does daddy have two dollars?”. If only it was that easy :-)

So we moved on to other {cheaper} costumes and as I suggested them to Mallory, she asked if daddy has enough dollars for her to be {a cupcake/bumblebee/whatever}.

So, I guess she hears me say “no, we can’t buy that (sugar cereal/silly dress/another pink water bottle/etc) because it’s not on sale” a lot, I’ll have to pay better attention to it. But I don’t like hearing her ask me if daddy has enough dollars. We are doing just fine and while I spend a *teeny tiny* bit more than Rick would like, my kids are well-cared for and want for almost nothing (except for sugar cereal/silly dress/another pink waterbottle/etc).
