Carson had his 18-mo doctors appointment this week. The doctor was pleased with everything; I think this 18-month appointment is where they can start to evaluate if there are autism issues or something, and while I didn’t have any concerns, it was nice to hear the doctor tell us all was well.
But she was a little concerned that he doesn’t have any understandable words. He does lots of “talking” but we have no idea what he’s saying. He uses sign language for “more” and “all done” and tells us he is thirsty by getting a sippy cup out of the cupboard, and he might have a word for “yes” but other than that – nothing. It’s so hard to not compare him to Mallory since she was crazy verbal at this age (see this post) plus you have the whole “he’s a boy” and “second kid” things working against him. We try to get him to repeat after us, but every time we do, someone else answers for him. Hmmm…wonder who what is.
Anyway, while the doctor was concerned, she wasn’t concerned enough to send us for further evaluation immediately. Apparently Carson is showing enough other signs of language development (he understands us and can follow directions and other stuff) that she is going to wait three months before making a decision. She thinks that we’ll start to see an explosion here soon so we’ll visit her in January (we shouldn’t have to see her for another well-child exam until he’s two in April) so that she can make sure he’s had the speech explosion she’s expecting. I have a good friend who is a speech therapist so I’m going to ask her for some things we can start trying to work on at home now.
Also – as to be expected, he’s still a big kid – 29.54 lbs (89%) and 34.02″ (90%).
He’s perfect.
He is perfect . Don’t worry for one moment! He is a Brandt which means he will think about his words before he says them. LOL I was worried about Colt when he was that age. It was like he was taking it all in. Once he started talking he didn’t shut up! Same with Kasey. He was way behind Gracie in language skills and now he is talkative all the time! As long as he understands what you are saying to him he is doing GREAT! Love, Nina.
