The day our daycare was closed

Mallory & Carson’s daycare NEVER closes for weather. We’ve been going there for four years and one month, and not once have they closed. They have, however, been closed a handful of times because of lost power – and it’s always been in the summer. So any time regular schools are closed, our daycare is still open, and I force myself to go to work because I hate wasting vacation days.

Then came February 1. News of a WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY! followed by WINTER STORM WARNINGS! which was trumped by BLIZZARD WARNINGS! caused our daycare to announce that they would be closed on February 2. This storm was predicted to dump 15-20” on Ann Arbor, after it was predicted to dump up to two feet in Chicago and elsewhere across the Midwest. All of the schools in southeast Michigan were closed, Eastern Michigan was closed, and “they” were telling businesses to not open on Wednesday, unless they provided essential services. Our daycare that never closes, closed. I was sort of happy that I didn’t have to make the judgment call to stay home on Wednesday – there have been other days when I wish I could have stayed home because the roads are bad, especially when I leave the house ~6.30a.

Anyway – the snow started to fall around 6.30p on Tuesday night, while we were out to dinner for my dad’s birthday (HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GRANDPA!). It was a lot of snow – and VERY windy. Roads that were clear an hour earlier were snow covered and slippery. The snow continued to fall all night but by morning, the blizzard warning (that was originally set to expire at 7p Wednesday) had expired, and the winter storm warning expired an hour after that. We ended up with only about 6” from last night – not quite the 12” or 15” or 20” we were supposed to get.

We’ve had snow on & off all day today – big huge fat flakes a while ago – SO PRETTY. I bundled my children up and we headed out in the yard (of course Michigan football is an “essential service”, so Rick went to work around 10.30a).

Notice the snowflake on Carson’s eyelash? Seeing things like that make me wish I’d had my real camera outside, instead of my fake one.

The snow was so deep that Carson couldn’t walk (or maybe it was just because he was so bundled up he couldn’t walk?). Mallory made quick work of making snow angels, and I tried to help Carson make some. I tried to also, and realized I need to find myself some overall snowpants.

Cooper had fun too – I should actually get him an anti-inflammatory – with the tennis ball. The snow was so fluffy that his tennis ball would sink as soon as it landed and he’d come up from finding it with a white face. LOL!

We just got back from getting Carson a haircut – and the roads were fine in town. Apparently Ann Arbor’s roads are worse but hopefully they will be good tomorrow morning!

Stay safe & warm!!
