Like lots of girls my age (or are we ladies now?), I remember when Princess Diana and Prince Charles got married. My friends & I used to argue over who got to have the fake name of “Princess Diana” when we played. Yes, we were ridiculous.
So…when this new Royal Wedding came upon us, I will admit to getting caught up in the hoopla. Not enough to plan a big party or take the day off work to celebrate, but I was excited about it. I set the DVR and planned to watch it with Mallory when we got home from school that day.
It works out that I work out before work so when I got up that morning to run jog/walk on the treadmill, I turned on the television to enjoy the festivities. I got to see all the family arrive at the church, and Prince William & Prince Harry arrive at the church, and then I realized it was getting close to the actual wedding starting so I ran upstairs and got Mallory up so she could watch it with me.
(In case you’ve forgotten, my darling daughter is obsessed with weddings and wedding dresses and wedding girls and wedding jewelry and wedding things that wedding girls wear on their heads that sometimes cover their faces.)
To say Mallory was excited is an understatement. But I don’t know if she was more excited that I woke her up before I left for work or if she was more excited because I woke her up to watch a fancy wedding on tv. Either way, I was beyond tickled at my decision to share the event in real time with my daughter.
We watched Catherine arrive at the church and Mallory appropriately oohed and aahed over all the details. She kept asking who everyone was and why was that married girl’s sister holding the married girl’s dress so it wouldn’t get dirty but who is going to hold the married girl’s sister’s dress so it won’t get dirty no one, she is only the sister.
I will also admit to perhaps tearing up (just a little) when Catherine arrived at the altar next to William, because I found his whispering to her unbelievably sweet.
Mallory got to watch more of the event live than I did because I had to go to work but when we got home after school that day, she wanted to watch it some more (and I wanted to see the carriage and the kiss and all that stuff!).
For a couple of days, Mallory kept requesting to watch the “woi-al wedding” again so she could see all the fancy dresses and hats. And because I am a junkie, I obliged and helped nurture her princess obsession. I didn’t learn until later that Catherine isn’t a Princess, she is only a Duchess, but I didn’t have the heart to own up to my mistake to Mallory. I will continue to let her think that this girl in the pretty dress became a princess on this day. But really, Princess, Duchess, what does it matter. Every girl is a princess on their wedding day. So there. :-P
Fast forward a week…my new People magazine showed up, and had the Royal Couple on the cover. That night at bedtime, Mallory crawled in my bed and when I got there she had already flipped through my magazine to tell me that if I want to see more pictures of that wedding girl, that I could open the magazine and see more pictures but they aren’t the same as the one on the cover.
Fast forward another week…Mallory told me that when she was at the donut grocery store with daddy (getting me flowers for Mother’s Day) that she “sawed a MAZAGINE and it had Catherine Princess and William Prince on it! But we didn’t get it for you because you already have a mazagine with them, wight?”

Actually it is in your genes.
And I spent that time in surgery and missed the whole thing. Funny story. When I came out of the anesthesia, of course they had taken my glasses and I couldn’t see well. Anyway I opened my eyes and saw some figures floating around with bright lights over their heads that I thought were angels! At least I thought I died and went to the right place! Then when the nurse got close I could see she had on a princess tiara with flashing lights. From a distance with my bad eyesight I thought they were halos. Turns out they thought it would be fun to commemorate the royal wedding. Little did they know they scared the shit out of me!!!! LOL
I don’t know which story was funnier, Mal’s or Nina’s
Aww Mallory is so cute! While Alex doesn’t care about weddings, he loved the horses and the Prince, but was mad that they didn’t have crowns on :)
Nina’s story is hilarious!
