Carson had his big 30-month check up today. 30 months as in he’s 2.5 years old now, also as in he is going to be THREE YEARS OLD in six months!
He was fantastic at his appointment. He walked right on to the scale and climbed up on the table to get measured by the medical assistant.
Then the doctor came in.
First thing she said was “you have a big boy”.
No kidding.
But really, I guess he is officially big. He is 37.26 lbs and 38.58”, meaning he is in the 97th percentile for weight and 93rd percentile for height (and his head circumference is still off the charts at 100%). The weight thing isn’t really that weird given his 10.5lb birth weight, but he dipped down to the 50-something percentile for weight when he was 4 months old. But ever since then, he’s been slowly climbing the charts. The crazy thing is that everyone (including me) is noticing how he is thinning out and losing his baby chunkiness so the fact that he is still so big is amazing.
The pediatrician told me not to worry about his speech. She pointed out the he was obviously communicating with her using sentences (and not simply grunts or one word answers) and while she didn’t always understand him, it was still early. We have a list of words that we need to listen for in the next six months, and have the goal that 75% of his speech be understood by some other percentage of people by April. Mallory & I are the only ones who understand most of the time (Mallory even translates for Rick sometimes…that is pretty funny).
Then it was time to assess some of his other developments – does he run without falling (um, all the time), can he jump (like crazy), can he stand on one foot? I didn’t know the answer to the last one so the doctor asked Carson to try. He said no, no, no, even if the doctor does it with you, no, no, how about with mommy, no, you can hold on to the chair, no, no, no, ok now I’m ready and not only will I stand here, I will stand here for like five seconds balancing on one foot because I’m THAT cool.
He also showed off how he lays across the seat of a chair and grabs the back of it and then lifts his legs up higher than his back. The doctor’s eyes got all big and she started cracking up at how strong he was.
So, we got a good report from the doctor and all was well until it was time for Carson’s flu shot. He was MAD – maybe at the nurse because she poked him, or maybe at me because I forgot his puppy blankie. Either way, he was crying about his boo-boo until he picked out a Thomas the Train dicker (sticker). Phew.
Let Coach Hoke know he’s got a player on his hands… well in a couple years.
He is also about to be a Butterfly :)
