Mallory started a new activity in the fall of 2012 (well, I guess technically she re-started an activity because she did gymnastics briefly a few years ago).
After two sessions of gymnastics we got suckered into signed up for a little meet at her gymnastics place back in December . It was sort of like her dance recitals where you pay money to sit and mostly watch kids you don’t know but it’s worth it to watch your kid do her thing with a HUGE smile on her face.
Luckily Mallory was the first one in her rotation so we could pay …
Year: 2013
Hmmmmm
So, Michigan is playing in the NCAA tournament starting today. After a side conversation that included Mallory asking “didn’t Michigan lose to Wisconsin in the tournament last weekend”, we talked about how it was a different tournament.
When I got Mallory off the bus this afternoon, she had a green shirt on. I told her I hoped that the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State weren’t green. She looked at me with a nervous look and I suggested maybe she could change her shirt. She said yes.
Then she said…
“Or I could take my shirt off and paint my stomach!”

The room under the stairs
Before encouraging (or allowing) your kids to start an insane collection, think about what they will do with the collection when they are 40 (or what their wife will do with the collection). These are all full of baseball cards.
And all of these bins were under our stairs and would have prevented our whole family from taking shelter during the tornado, had I chosen to take shelter.
I’m moving them today.
The Dexter Tornado ~ a year later
March 15, 2013. The anniversary of the tornado that messed up our neighborhood.
I wasn’t as emotional yesterday as I thought I was going to be (ill-behaved children and a Michigan basketball loss helped keep my mind off the anniversary), but it a milestone I was happy to pass.
I don’t need to re-write about what happened on March 15, 2012 – you can read about it here (March 15, 2012 post). And I don’t need to re-write about what the days were like after the tornado – you can read about that here (March 17, 2012 post). And I …
Teaching Trash Talking to My Three Year Old
Carson did the Shamrocks & Shenanigans Race this morning and came in second in the Kids Dash.
After the race he was telling me all about the race and how he was behind this other girl but then he just ran right past her.
I asked him if he Denarded her. He grinned and said yes.
Then he said that he didn’t know her name. I suggested that maybe her name was Third Place.
He grinned again. And started the story over and told me he Denarded that other girl and her name was Third Place.
Handsome Hair
I have a little fun with Carson’s hair after he takes a bath.
I love that his favorite favorite favorite is “handsome hair”.
I look back at pictures from when he was little and he had wispy curly hair and I keep wondering what would happen if I let it grow a little longer. But he looks so cute all clean cut!
Snow Day Recipe
After having no snow days in kindergarten, Mallory has had four snow days in first grade. I’ve heard my teacher friends talk about how to encourage a snow day with some bedtime rituals, so I laughed when Mallory got off the bus today and told me what she wanted to do before bed.
Here is the video of her telling me what she learned about how to get a snow day:
And she was beside herself at bedtime, running around the house, getting a white crayon and a spoon and yelling at Rick & me so that we could simultaneously flush three …
Hoops with Carson recap
Carson & I went to the basketball game today – Michigan won big near the end (after trailing early).
In the car going home, I thanked Carson for going to the game with me and he said “you’re welcome!”
I told him it was really fun.
He said “But when we won? It was WEALLY fun!”
And then he said “The bad team was winning at the beginning but then we got ahead!”
When I asked what is favorite part of the game was, he said it was when we won. And his second favorite part was “bout when we got some slam …
Six-ish months of posts
I really should title this “A year-plus of posts” because I really feel like it’s been that long since I’ve been really writing here. So I’m going to do a massive update post (with no pictures, because that is my big road-block lately) and try to get caught up.
Football started, school started, activities started, we went to Purdue for an away game, the Tigers made the World Series (Carson still loves baseball), Tigers didn’t win the World Series, Halloween, Mallory’s birthday, basketball season started (Carson still loves basketball), Thanksgiving, Christmas, trip to Tampa for the bowl game, Mallory lost …
Carson’s latest
Carson is still such a little dude and it is so funny to hear some of the stuff he comes up with.
Leaving Florida last week, Mallory said “we are closer to Miami!” and Carson said, “and MY Ami!”
He informed us that when he gets older, he will play football – QB – at Michigan and that his name will be Denard Robinson. When he is done playing football his name will be something else (not Carson or Denard). This goes back and forth about whether he will be Denard Robinson or Denard Brandt.
Rick just headed to the basement [where the kids …
