One of my favorite things about this summer has been watching Mallory be part of swim team. Swimming has been something that has been up & down for both kids, and in the past Mallory hadn’t been super excited about doing swim team and the necessary swim team meets (I was afraid she inherited my non-sports competitiveness and not her dad’s love of races).
When we realized that we’d have a sitter for this summer, I asked Mallory again if she wanted to try swim team. I was beyond surprised when she said she’d try it out, even though it meant races and lots of practices. Practices are at 8am every morning…I’m sort of bummed that Mallory doesn’t really get to sleep in during the summer – ha!
She had her first meet on June 21; she was on the schedule to swim butterfly in the team medley relay, 25yd freestyle, and 25yd backstroke. After the sitter texted to tell me Mallory’s events, I was worried because I didn’t know she knew how to swim butterfly :-) Rick was in the midst of youth football camps and I was so bummed that he was going to miss her first meet, but he was able to sneak away and watch her first two events.
But – turns out, she is pretty good at butterfly and her team got 4th place in the team medley in the first meet! She had SO MUCH FUN in the meet, she told me after that it was funner than swinging on the swingset. Ok then! I learned so much about swimming at just one meet – what the sharpies are for that we were supposed to bring (so you can write your events on your arm) and what kind of snacks are best to pack for her to have between events.
Her second meet was this past weekend and Rick was in charge of the real camera. The best was during her freestyle event and she was in the lane right next to where we were cheering for her – and as we were yelling at her, she looked up at us and smiled & laughed during the race.
Here are a boatload of pictures and there are some videos at the end. Go Lightning!!
