We signed Mallory up for t-ball this summer. She said she wanted to play but I wasn’t sure how it would work out without a friend or two on her team. My sister signed Liam up too so that made it fun!
The very first night – Mallory got singled out for having a great “ready” stance. But by the end of the night, she was playing in the dirt and writing her name in cursive at second base. Another funny thing about the season – she takes practice half-swings at the ball when it’s sitting on the tee (she doesn’t …

2012 Big Ten Champs
The kids got into softball again this year; we didn’t make it to a lot of games this year (between the kids activities and tornado recovery, our spring was uber-hectic) but we got to catch a few games in person, and a lot of games on TV.
Chiddy was a favorite again this year, and Mallory’s other favorites were Haylie (the pitcher) and Bree (#5 – Mallory picked her because she was 5 years old this past spring).
At the end of the season, I took the kids up to see Rick while he collected all of the equipment and stuff back …
So behind
I think it’s time for me to do a “things I need to blog about” post:
Mallory learned how to ride her bike without training wheels. I can’t believe I haven’t shared this here yet.
Mallory can also do an entire length of freestyle at the pool, taking real roll-over breaths and everything. It’s CRAZY to see how stuff just seems to click with her. I was almost ready to pull her from swim lessons because she’d seem to hit a wall and wasn’t able to get over the “roll-over breath” and then voila! She figured it out. She is working …
Fireworks
Another summer, another Fourth of July (guess it happens every summer, eh?). This year, Mallory’s friend invited us to a fireworks show at a local farm in Dexter. We showed up with a cooler and blankets and Laci’s mom was prepared with festive headbands for all four kids.
If I wasn’t writing about this two months late, I’d have a lot more to say. But instead I’ll let you enjoy these pictures.
Drawing in the dirt
Mallory started tball tonight. She was great in the beginning (the coach even told the rest of the team to see how Mallory was in the ready position).
But two innings later, she was playing in the dirt at second base. When she came off the field, I asked how the dirt was.
“Good!”, she said. “I wrote my name in cursive.”.
Nice.
So Call Me Maybe
Here’s Mallory’s version of the Harvard baseball team’s version of Carly Rae Jepson’s “Call Me Maybe”.
I suppose Carson is playing the part of the guy asleep in the back row.
It’s hard to see behind the sunglasses and lipgloss application, but if you look closely you’ll be able to see Mallory (try to) wink at the right time near the end.
Graduation
My mom retired yesterday. Her last day of work!
I told Mallory that it was Gigi’s last day of work.
Mallory: “Did she GRADUATE from work?”
Me: “I suppose she did.”
Mallory: “CAN WE GO???!?!?!”
I think she already knows that graduation means a party and cake. ;-)
First & Last ~ Kindergarten Style
First day of Kindergarten (September 2011)…
and the last day of Kindergarten (June 2012 ~ complete with remnants of dress rehearsal makeup…)
Isn’t so she cool with the backpack over one shoulder? I mean honestly…
Toughest mom moment
I just had my toughest moment as a mom…trying to decipher Mallory’s explanation for how she wanted her hair tomorrow. She said she wanted two ponytails and one is like this and then the other is like this. She tried to show me on her Barbie head but her hair wasn’t long enough. So she tried to do it on my hair but instead she pulled out a ton of hair in her attempts to do her dream hairdo.
It took about 10 minutes and her getting crazy frustrated at me for not getting what she was trying to explain …
Tonight’s book
This is the book Mallory grabbed for us to read at bedtime tonight. It’s the hard cover version of my blog from 2006 & 2007.
I wish I’d been videoing her when she said “REALLY???? You wrote this book?”
