Big goings-on in the Big House this week – they put in a hockey rink so that Michigan and MSU can play on Saturday in front of a world-record 100,000+ people! They have had all sorts of games being played this week for all different levels of hockey, and tonight they let athletic department folks and their families come skate.
Before our skate, we watched Brendan skate in a game. When we walked in the stadium for that game (without Rick), Mallory had questions about the big machinery that was outside Rick’s football equipment room. I explained it was the refrigeration …

In an attempt to get a jump on our holiday cards, and to take advantage of some decent November weather, I dragged everyone up to the park for a family photo session.
I had the tripod and the self-timer, but no way to get the kids (especially Carson) to look at the camera, so I asked three 10-ish year old boys who were walking through the park if they’d mind jumping around behind my camera so M & C would look in the direction. They were AWESOME and so cute and helpful – I made Rick give me some cash to …
Photoshop Phix
I’ve posted this after picture before but thought I’d share the before.
I usually shoot most of my sessions in RAW but sometimes switch to JPG when I shoot my kids (just to save some processing time on my family snapshots).
Here is this picture, SOOC and converted to JPG:
And here it is fixed.
I know the sky is too light but I don’t care since now I can see her face. If this was for a client, I’d probably work more on not blowing out the sky before I took the picture, since that’s hard to undo, but since it’s just Mallory …
A Pooped Coop
Cooper got a rare treat today – a long long LONG walk in the woods near our house. We haven’t done this in a while, mostly because I am not a fan of loading him in my car since it means I have to put him in the front seat and I usually like to keep my car spotless so I don’t like his hair & dirt all over the place.
Back before kids, Cooper & I would walk in the woods almost daily – and we met Cathy who has two dogs. I’ve been lucky to meet up with …
Weekend Wrap-up
I am a slacker blogger. I have been lollygagging my way around posting this week – I don’t know quite why, since the mounds of laundry that I have to fold & put away and the messes that exist in my house are no indication that I’ve been spending my time doing anything particularly worthwhile. But I have been enjoying my children and trying to figure out how in the world other moms handle after school/work time if they work until 5p. I am home with my babies by 4.15p every afternoon and I still never sit down until they …
Clickin Kids
I’m part of a little study group of women from the Clickin Moms community (it is an online group for moms who take pictures – you can get feedback on your photos, and get lots of great ideas!). My study group is all about understanding exposure, something I know I need to work on. I’m a little behind in my “studies” because I keep forgetting to read the book and take the pictures, but tonight I finally decided to take the pictures for the first assignment. I had to get my camera’s manual out, too, so I could figure out …
Hay
Sunday morning was a great morning to go take pictures at the pumpkin farm. It wasn’t too sunny, it wasn’t too hot, it wasn’t too cold, and my kids were in good moods. Mallory looks pretty serious in these pictures because she was busy watching all the other kids play.
I took about 180 photos and ended up with about 20 that are decent. I’m still learning my new lens and need to practice with the shallow depth of focus. I’m also supposed to practicing with exposure but I’ve been sort of busy.
This …
The Up North Trip
We are on our annual pilgrimage to visit my aunt & uncle “up north”. The kids were great on the trip up, Carson slept the entire time up which was fabulous. We also timed our trip so that we would get to see my grade school friend Mandy & her family. They discovered a great little petting farm near their house so we took all four kids there on Saturday. They had two mamma pigs and a bunch of little piglets – some of whom were trying to nurse, so Mallory said “Mommy, those piggies are trying to eat like …
Some fancy pictures
While it pains me to pay money to have someone else take pictures of my kids, we have to bite the bullet occasionally in order to get a family photo.
Here are some pictures we had done back in May – Carson was ~6wks old here.
I really think I can take pictures like this of my family & friends. Anyone want to be my guinea pig?
A day in the life – Mallory-style
I have to share some pictures. I was cracking up when I checked out the snapshots from today.
